How to operate the loading robot

Feb 28, 2025

Safety precautions for operating loading manipulators

1. Pre-operation inspection

Robot arm condition: Check whether the appearance of the robot arm is damaged or deformed, and whether the connection parts are firm. Check whether there is enough lubricant in the joints. If the lubricant is insufficient, it may cause parts to wear or even get stuck during operation, causing safety accidents. For example, a port lacked lubricant in the robot arm joints, causing the robot arm to suddenly get stuck during operation, causing the cargo to fall.

Electrical system: Confirm that the wires are not damaged or aged, and that the plugs and sockets are tightly connected. Check whether the electrical components in the control box are normal, loose, or burnt. Electrical system failures may cause short circuits or leakage, threatening the life of operators. For example, an operator's hand was burned by an electric arc due to a short circuit in the electrical circuit.

Cargo slings: The strength and integrity of the slings are crucial. Check the hooks for cracks, excessive wear, and whether the slings are broken or deformed. Unqualified slings may break during the lifting of cargo, causing the cargo to fall. In the past, the cargo fell and damaged the equipment during the lifting because the slings broke without being discovered.

2. Operation process specifications

Start-up operation: Before starting the robot arm, sound the horn to warn surrounding personnel. Start the equipment strictly according to the operating procedures, and first conduct a low-speed no-load test run to observe whether the robot arm runs smoothly and whether there are any abnormal sounds. If it is started directly at high speed, serious consequences may occur due to undetected equipment failure.

Lifting operation: When lifting cargo, keep the cargo's center of gravity stable and avoid tilting or shaking. Overloading is strictly prohibited and the robot arm must be operated strictly in accordance with its rated lifting capacity. Overloading can damage the robot arm structure and even cause the robot arm to tip over. For example, a port violated regulations by overloading during lifting, causing the robot arm to collapse and causing significant losses.

Action operation: The robot arm should be operated smoothly and slowly to avoid sudden stops and starts. When rotating, lifting, and retracting, always pay attention to the movement trajectory of the robot arm to prevent collision with surrounding objects. There was an operator who operated too hard and the robot arm collided with the cabin, damaging the equipment.

3. Control of surrounding environment

Personnel management: Set up obvious warning signs in the operation area, and no unauthorized personnel are allowed to enter. The commander should work closely with the operator and the signal should be clear. If the signal is unclear, the operator may make a mistake and cause danger. For example, if the command signal is unclear, the robot arm may collide with other equipment.

Weather conditions: Stop operations in bad weather such as strong winds, heavy rain, and heavy fog. Strong winds may cause the cargo to shake more severely or even blow it off; heavy rains affect sight lines, and heavy fog reduces visibility, which can easily lead to accidents. There was a port that violated regulations in foggy weather, resulting in a collision between the robot arm and the ship.
